About Babst Calland, Attorneys at Law

Babst Calland, Attorneys at Law.

Babst Calland’s Energy and Natural Resources attorneys work collaboratively across legal disciplines to serve the needs of energy companies across the United States on a variety of matters. Based in Washington, D.C., the Firm’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety practice represents clients on all types of pipeline safety and hazardous materials transportation matters.

Led by former attorneys for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), our team leverages this experience to provide creative solutions to the most challenging pipeline and hazmat safety issues. Our clients include pipeline companies, utilities, LNG facilities, terminal operators, investors, trade associations, chemical companies, and other stakeholders in the energy and transportation industries. We partner with our clients on day-to-day regulatory compliance and strategic challenges, internal auditing and investigations, transaction due diligence, inspection preparation, PHMSA and state enforcement proceedings, and litigating challenges to agency action in state and federal courts. We also assist clients in obtaining special permits, responding to accidents and incidents, and in rulemaking and legislative development. Babst Calland, with affiliated Alternative Legal Service Provider, Solvaire, developed PIPES TRACKER™ – the most comprehensive and easy-to-use pipeline safety regulatory database search and tracking tool available to search and track enforcement cases issued by PHMSA.

With a deep understanding of matters relating to the safety and regulation of oil and gas pipelines and LNG facilities, our attorneys have experience in all sectors of the pipeline industry, including gas transmission, gathering, distribution, oil, natural gas liquid, and product pipelines, LNG facilities, pipeline construction, and products and chemicals terminals. We work in cooperation with other agencies, including PHMSA, the Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, and United States Coast Guard.

In addition to offering legal and regulatory counsel, our attorneys are involved and act as regulatory counsel to several of the nation’s leading trade organizations and are frequent speakers at industry events across the country.
